Captain John's Fronds for Feathers~The Oil Spill

Morning Ya'll (Sunday 7:38am)
Friday I loaded up the green house, and sold them on the side of the road, for rescue money. I had, had enough. Netted a good little stash, the bumpkin was only a little mad about her flowers, and now I can do what I can do.

Alot of you have asked me about the locations of the islands that you hear about, not far 6-8 miles out and complelty indundated for the most part. This is where the birds are. We even have one less than mile out, called Deer Island, actually split in two by Katrina, so it's technically Deer Islands now. We pull the boats up here, a redneck yacht club, and shoot the breeze, literally a nice cool breezy place to take a break, you with me?
Click on the map to go to the bigger version. Remember, we live in Ocean Springs.

South (bottom) and to the East (right) you can take in this sight. 2 really big sink holes on either end of this island, will score you the big ones fishermen, man do I miss those days. Never thought for a moment, it would be snatched away by so much carelessness.

The picture above, seems like so long ago. This is Horn Island

Go ahead and hit play ya'll. Perfect song for this post. An oldie and a real goodie.

The Bumpkin says that I should warn some of you that this post contains graphic images. I say, naw not my readers, we keep it real, face the truth head on, and stare it straight in the eye. Keep going, I'll warn you before it's time, and I'll let you know when to stick your head in the oily sand.

It's still hard for us to believe that this was allowed to happen. I have sailed these waters for years. I can not believe this has happened to us, and our ocean.

37% of The Gulf of Mexico is closed. 37% of the ocean ya'll.

A boat wake through the oil.

By now you have probably heard about my birds, PETA is using words like criminal prosecution, and animal abuse, you know we have been wondering where they were for weeks. Little too late in my opinion, and don't think I haven't voiced my displeasure.

How many times have we've talked about Talkers and Doers? I got the talking part done now, and I'm outta here. Another long day, she'll keep things going at home, washing, cooking, making it as easy for me as she can. My buddy Evan and I, are tag teaming today, yep, everybody I know is pitching in some how. Sometimes, a quick shower and a clean suit of clothes, is just what you need. I'll do what I can. What I can do, is better than nothing, right?
Give me so love in the comments column, ya'll. It gives me more strength, than you could ever know. When I'm out there, I hear the words in my head that the Bumpkin reads to me each week, from each of you. I feel like you are standing on the shores rooting me on. Tell me, what would ya' say?
It's hot out there ya'll, gotta get moving.
Semper Fi,
Captain John

Oh John ~ I am sending both you and Lisa lots of love and hugs from the north ~ way north. My heart breaks and I am so sad to see this happening due to pure carelessness and greed. Lisa and I have talked about your beach and I can feel your pain as I too have a beach that I am in love with and cannot imagine it being taken away from me. I hope these words are showing you some love ~ wish I could do more. From Lisa's wildflower pickin sista in the great white north. xo

Captain John & Bumpkin, I have tears in my eyes reading your words and seeing the photos. CNN is doing a great job with Anderson Cooper's reporting. But they are not from the Gulf Coast, like we all are, and really don't understand fully. I posted last night about this, and our apathetic countrymen if you would like to read my rant. Keep the faith guys, my daughter, Vanessa, who lives in Orlando (because of work) and I are going over to Pensacola, Destin & Ft. Walton Beach tomorrow to help. One of our friends in Houston is from there (her dad was a U2 pilot who is buried at Arlington), she was raised there. She says for the 1st time in her life as she drove over the big bridge between Alabama & Florida - as far as she could see there was oil sheen on top of the waters. I have thought so much about how to respond to this castastrophe, and I'm a woman with absolutely no knowledge of this industry. Risk management? Did anyone at any of our agencies or TransOcean or BP study risk management or was it just ignored ignored ignored? Vote out every incumbent currently serving. Let's start over. Maybe you should run for office? Yes, I think you could get elected. xx's Marsha

Kudos to you for helping to raise some money for the cause! It is such a devastating situation in so many ways. I, too, can not understand how this leak has been going on for so long. With the millions of engineers in the world no one has come up with a solution?? Hard to believe...
In any case, keep your heads and your hearts high. And thank you for sharing with those of us who aren't able to see it all first hand.

Praying for something good to happen..please may it stop.

Thanks so much for giving us real pictures of what is going on. I can promise you this tragedy is not getting the coverage it should.

I can't believe the spin..."Good news, we're capturing most of the oil". #)#($)(+%)(

1 barrel leaking a day is too much. I haven't written letters to congressmen and officials since I was a Greenpeace and Amnesty International member 30 years ago but I started this weekend. We need national action against BP NOW to insure clean up is done. I'm talking seizure of assets.

thank you for your thoughts and for doing what you can. I live in Pensacola, Fl and the oil has reached our shores as well. Like you I am a lover of the beach. We spend most of our time there from Spring through the fall. I heard from some freinds today it is reaching Destin today. How it breaks my heart too. What is scary is thining about all that is to come. Some might say prayer is in vain, but what more do we have? Godspeed friend...

Captain & Bumpkin, big hugs from the Gulf Shores, AL. We have oil in the form of nasty tar balls all over MY beach and more in the water. Needless to say our days of getting in the water are over. It's hard to see, smell and stomach. Hang in there, we're all in for a long ride here. I keep saying, blue drinks at Lulu's are in order. It won't make it go away, but it will help us forget for just a short while. XOXO

Those poor poor birds and animals. I am weeping at my desk.

I wish there was more that I could do to help.

My thoughts are with you guys, and everyone else who is directly affected and all those poor creatures that are having their lives destroyed.

Still just so heartsick over this whole situation... thanks for the updates captain... has anyone been putting ya'll to 'official' clean up use yet, or are you still doing your own cowboy clean up around there?

Hang in there... and keep working... I know it feels like a lot, but every bit helps it really does... and keep being loud and rowdy... I don't know if you watch Anderson Cooper, but he's been doing newscasts from the coast for the past week, and he seems to be pretty straightforward and honest about what's happeneing... a few days ago he did an interview with a fisherman who was putting booms out last month for BP and BP still hasn't paid the guy, and he also interviewed other fishermen who are doing what you're doing and shooting out on their own... they were talking about not only loss of livelihood by destruction of their ocean, but also how hard riding through all that oil is on the boats.... I just can't imagine! hang in there!

I really hope they do something that's effective towards this tragedy soon. This is unbelievable. These poor animals. I've been buying Dawn products because I heard they are donating to help clean the animals.

Damn. Damn. That is all that is coming to mind right now. That and thanks. I feel like it doesn't mean much to say that, but I know it still feels good to hear. Right???? Hope so. People like ya'll are the reason why I KNOW our Gulf region WILL bounce back. If the bumpkin will let me crash at your pad, I will come and kick off the heels and get to work....whatta ya say?

I am here thanks to Lauren over at Salt Says....I posted on the oil spill today and would love to link to you. This is a phenomenal post, especially since you're right THERE.

I am a New Orleans girl and lived there up until 6 years ago. My family still lives there (in Metairie). We were there to visit just a few weeks ago....so this hits close to my heart/home as well.

I am your newest follower. Thank you for spreading the word and educating people about what is really going on. Let me know if I can add a link to your blog in my post today.

Thank you!

Thank you Captain John & my precious Bumpkin for sharing with us what so many won't.

Where are the others who talk & talk? Haven't we all learned by now that action (not talk) is the best medicine??

Thank you.

Thank you.

I cannot say it enough.
